BEIJING, Feb. 6 -- Relaxation, which involves proper exercises, resetting the body's biological clock to the regular work schedule and lowering expectations over the first few days after a holiday, may help people handle post-holiday stress, according to doctors.
If you feel tired, lazy or can't concentrate at work after a long holiday, you may well be afflicted by the post-holiday syndrome, a psychological and physical disorder which occurs after long holidays.
"People are too busy to feel the 'blues' during the holiday season. But when all the fun is over, some of them can't adjust themselves to a quick work tempo," said Professor Liu Tiebang with Shenzhen Kangning Hospital. "They will easily get tired and dozy or even have a headache or poor appetite."
People are advised to relax both mentally and physically in the first one or two weeks after a long holiday like the Spring Festival. They are recommended to go to bed and get up at the same time every day to reset the circadian clock in one's body and ensure a sound sleep as well.
Gentle exercises like walking, rope skipping, and practising taichi may also help one relax and enhance immunity, Liu said.
Besides, people should avoid making important plans or decisions during this period as it may increase pressure. Instead, they are advised to get themselves busy with easy tasks, leaving minimum room for depression.
The city's first aid center handled some 2,000 emergency cases from Jan. 28 to Saturday, most of which were related to road accidents, trauma, alcoholism, gas poisoning, cardiopathy, and respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases.
On Saturday and Sunday, major hospitals received more respiratory and gastrointestinal cases, a typical result of irregular lifestyles and diet.People should drink more water, eat fresh fruit and be aware of weather changes after the warm Spring Festival, doctors said.
