Meningitis kills 11 people in northeastern Uganda

     KAMPALA, Jan. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Some 140 suspected Meningitis cases with 11 deaths have been reported since the beginning of this year in northeastern Uganda, the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation Radio reported on Saturday.

    The report said that the Ministry of Health has confirmed an outbreak of meningitis in Nabilatuk and Namalu sub-counties in Nakapiripirit district in Karamoja region.

    Director General of Health Services from the ministry said the ministry has sent a combined team including officials from the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund to the area to assist with control, while additional drugs and necessary supplies have been provided.

    He warned the general public in the affected sub-counties of Nakapiripirit district should avoid large gathering which enhances the disease transmission.

    The general public is further urged to report any suspected cases to the nearest health unit for prompt medical attention.

    The disease is characterized by high fever, severe headache andneck stiffness. Enditem
