MACAO, Jan. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- The present water salinity crisis is expected to be eased in one week, local media reported on Thursday.
Macao Post Daily quoted Fan Xiaojun, deputy general of the Macao Water Co. Ltd, as saying that thanking to the mainland's recent water diversion scheme, drinking water with lower salinity level will be available for Macao residents on Jan. 20.
The mainland concerned authorities, under the scheme, have beendiverting fresh raw water from the northern part of the Guangdong province, where salinity level is low, to Macao's water supply via the neighboring city of Zhuhai, Fan told the newspaper.
Macao, counting the water supply on Xijiang River which is originated in Guangdong province, is currently enduring its worst ever salinity crisis.
The salinity problem was caused by the intake of the sea water during the dry winter season.
The salinity level stood at 600 mg/l the previous day in Macao, far above the 200-mg/l standard set up by the World Health Organization.
Macao Water, a Macao-Portuguese joint venture, is holding the monopoly of the city's tap water supply. Enditem
