KIGALI, Jan. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Death toll of the recent outbreak of Cholera in Rwandan has risen to seventeen, officials said here on Monday.

"We are facing a serious outbreak of cholera; so far, over 150 people have been admitted in Masaka Hospital, out of which 80 have already received treatment and have been discharged. Seventy are still admitted in the hospital," said Fidel Ndayisaba, the executive secretary of Rwandan capital Kigali.

The disease which erupted in December is attributed to the use of contaminated water from Nyabarongo River, he added.

The official said that the state-run company for water and electricity, Electrogaz is expediting repairs on the water pipes.

"We are trying to supply enough clean water to the area with the help of the city council, police, army and volunteers," he said.

"Trucks are used to transport and supply tap water to the area as the pipelines are still under repair."

Early last week, the official in charge of Masaka Hospital, Sr.Maria Gorreti Maama said the disease had claimed ten lives. Enditem
