BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. announced on Friday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug for treatment of moderate to severe cases of rheumatoid arthritis.
The drug, abatacept, is to be marketed under the name Orencia and is designed to be given intravenously.
The New York-based company intends to start selling it by the end of February.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation in the lining of joints. It causes chronic pain and limits joint motion. Some 2 million people in the U.S. suffer from it.
