SHENZHEN, Dec. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- About 97 percent of Chinese population suffer from various mouth diseases of different degrees, and existing dental doctors can't cope with the demand for their services, an expert on oral health has said.

An average of 20,000 Chinese share a specialist in oral health, compared with the 1,000 to one ratio in some developed countries, Zhang Zhenkang, president of the Chinese Society of Stomatology, said in southern Guangdong Province.

China had some 60,000 officially registered doctors on mouth diseases as of 2003, and over 200 students majored in oral health graduate from dozens of medical universities every year, said Zhang.

China's oral medicine lags far behind developed countries, particularly in terms of technology, equipment, materials, human resources and management, said Zhang as he called for more effort to promote the growth of the sector. Enditem
