SINGAPORE, Sept. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- A 38-year-old shop assistant died of dengue in Singapore on Wednesday, becoming the 12th victim of the disease this year, according to a Channel NewsAsia report.
The shop assistant developed dengue shock syndrome with multi-organ failure after being hospitalized on Sept. 21.
A total of 10,951 dengue cases were reported as of Sept. 24, with the record weekly high of 697 cases being found between Sept. 18 and 24.
To tackle the serious dengue situation in the city state, an Inter-Ministerial Committee was formed on Sept. 9, while an extra 30 million Singapore dollars (about 18 million US dollars) have been allocated by the government.
Government agencies are partnering communities to carry out campaigns over the recent weekends to "carpet-comb" possible mosquito breeding places nationwide, during which 220 such sites were found and destroyed during the past weekend.
Singaporeans are also urged to perform a ten-minute, five-step routine check everyday to free their homes from mosquitoes, while fogging has been carried out in public areas.
A total of 9,459 dengue cases were reported last year in Singapore. Enditem
