SINGAPORE, Sept. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- The National Cancer Center of Singapore encouraged women, those aged 50 to 65 in particular, to go for breast cancer screening regularly, Channel NewsAsia said on Monday.
Doctors said that the procedure will help early detect breast cancer, which kills 270 women in Singapore out of some 1,100 female who are diagnosed with the disease every year.
They said that if cancer is picked up in the pre-invasive stage and is treated appropriately, the cure rate can be as high as 99 percent, and the cure rate of early detected invasive cancer is about 90 percent.
Early screening will also be the focus of this year's Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, during which free screening will be offered to 200 women who are unable to afford it.
A 2-kilometer walk with a participation of 500 people will be organized on Oct. 2.
Currently, less than half of Singaporean women take the screening and the re-screening rate is going down, according to the report. Enditem
