SINGAPORE, Sept. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- Two more Singaporeans, a 55-year-old woman and a 61-year-old man, died of the prevailing dengue disease in August and September respectively, Channel NewsAsia reported on Thursday.
The two victims had suffered from other health problems with the woman having diabetes and chronic renal failure and the man having liver cirrhosis, according to the Ministry of Health.
A total of 10 people have died of the disease in Singapore thisyear, while 10,237 dengue cases were reported as of Sept. 17.
The daily number of cases has almost kept above 100 since early September, which registered 136 between 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday and 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.
To tackle the serious dengue situation in the city state, an Inter-Ministerial Committee was formed on Sept. 9, while an extra 30 million Singapore dollars (about 18 million US dollars) have been allocated by the government.
Government agencies are partnering communities to carry out search-and-destroy campaigns over the recent weekends to "carpet-comb" possible mosquito breeding places nationwide.
Singaporeans are also urged to perform a ten-minute, five-step routine check everyday to free their homes from mosquitoes.
A total of 9,459 dengue cases were reported for the whole of last year in Singapore. Enditem
