Professional teeth cleaning unpopular

BEIJING, Sept. 21 -- More than 60 percent of first-time visitors to dental clinics in the city have never had their teeth cleaned by a dentist, according to the Shanghai Medical Aid Network and the Chinese Stomatological Association.

Dental experts provided free consultations to people along Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall yesterday, to mark China Tooth Care Day.

"Chinese people still lag behind on dental health, as many people have misunderstandings about tooth cleaning.

They worry that the process can injure teeth, expand gaps or is painful," said Dr Hu Guodong, a member of the Chinese Stomatological Association.

"However, it won't impact teeth. On the contrary, it can effectively strengthen teeth and prevent diseases."

Dentists say people should have their teeth professionally cleaned every six months.

"People should get their teeth cleaned at qualified hospitals and facilities, instead of unlicensed beauty parlors and clinics.

Inappropriate operation can influence dental health and even result in infections," said Wang Zuolin, president of Shanghai Stomatological Hospital.
