Global Funds help Guangxi fight AIDS

     NANNING, Sept. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Five cities and 13 counties in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region will benefit from afive-year anti-AIDS program with aid of over 10 million US dollars from the Global Fund.

    The program aims to help concerned departments, especially non-governmental organizations in the region, prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS among mainline drug consumers and underground prostitutes and reduce the negative impact of the killer disease by introducing comprehensive preventive measures, according to theregional health department.

    These measures employ a methadone substitute, syringe swapping,behavioral therapy via publicity and peer education, voluntary consultation and tests, anti-virus treatment, blocking transmission from mother to infants and arousing the public to care for HIV/AIDS carriers.

    The Global Fund, which began operation in January 2002, was created by the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan to raise finances from governments, business and private donors to help the poor nations fight HIV/AIDS. It has funded 130 countries and regions to fight AIDS.

    Altogether, 76 counties in seven Chinese provinces and autonomous regions, including Guangxi, Yunnan, Sichuan, Hunan, Guizhou and Jiangxi provinces, and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, will benefit from the program with a total financial support of 98.07 million US dollars from the Global Fund in the next five years.
